Cooking Class {Fish Tacos}

Groupon had a deal for a cooking class for two people at our Sacramento Food Co-op and I thought it would be ridiculously fun. (Plus its on my list of 33). I invited Amy as a belated “birthday” gift and we picked from the list of classes. First we chose a pizza making one, but it was sold out. So we picked fish tacos. Neither of us knew how to make them, but love to eat them! I’m so happy we picked this one because this is the class where you don’t just get a sample taste of the dish. We got 5 whole freakin’ tacos!!

When we got there, we quickly realized this was an instructional class where you just sit and watch the teacher do all the work. I was a little bummed because I had romantic visions of putting on an apron, doing some furious chopping of things, and impress the class with some fancy pan flipping action. #idontknowhowtodothosethings Oh well. Next time. We sat in the back and tried not to giggle so hard that we disrupted things. (Mom, I’m sure this doesn’t surprise you.)

We found the following things to be hilarious:

The annoying chick that sat in the front asking stupid questions. Why does every class have one of those??!

The class almost had a coughing fit from the searing blackened salmon fumes.

The teachers made us pass around all the ingredients. I think we all know what Panko breadcrumbs and corn tortillas look like, lady!

The goth gentleman with black fingernails who checked us in and carded us before serving beer. After looking at our id’s he says, “Oh wow, you’re a lot older that I thought.” Um…..thank you??

And lastly, by the end of the class, we confirmed our teacher did in fact have a lazy eye.

Its like God brought all these people together to make sure I had the best time ever. Thanks, big guy!

We got a little packet at our table with the menu, the recipes, coupons, a “low mercury” fish guide, and a Sac Food Co-op newsletter. While the teacher was cooking the first dish, the main kitchen passed around one taco to each of us. I was full after just that first one and vowed to eat only one bite of each from there on out. But that didn’t happen. They were all so amazing that I demolished all 5. So did Amy. Are you imagining me shoveling tacos in my mouth right now? Because that’s pretty much what happened. The teacher thought it was wrong to cut the tacos in half to give us smaller portions and I think she was oh-so-right. I was also happy she didn’t fry any of the fish either. Which means they are safe for me to eat and I will DEFINITELY be making them again. Let me know if anyone out there wants the recipes and I’m happy to email! Now, try not to drool as you stare at these beauties…….
