I saw this project on Pinterest and wanted to give it a shot as a birthday present for our friend Kane. He’s turning two. His Mom loved the idea so I set out on my mission. I must have looked like a MORON wandering through Home Depot for wood and wood stain. I probably walked the store 4 times over. Anyways, got the goods and since I didn’t have any directions to follow, I just rolled with it. I’ve never stained anything before either so this whole project was a total crap shoot. In the back of my head I was fully prepared to go and buy him a toy when this thing turned out to be a heinous piece of shit. Long story short, I sanded and stained it one night. Polyurethane coated it the next night. And started hammering away the next day. (The day of the party. Standard.). I printed out huge letters on the computer and lined them up to show me where to hammer. Once the nails were in, I ripped off the paper and started a stringin’. I got my twine from this etsy shop. You have to be calculated on how to make the string “fill in” the letter but it was pretty fun. I think it turned out pretty damn cute for my first try!! Hope you like it, Kane!! Xo

Tips: You will need a LOT of nails for this project. Get the short and skinny ones (yes, that’s a technical term) but make sure they have a nice, flat head on them. Helps the string to stay put and not slip off the nail. Especially, if you hammer nails in crooked, like I do. And, you can probably skip the polyurethane. I noticed no difference in feel or in the look of it after I did it. Also, I have yet to attach a fixture on the back for hanging. Not sure what the best option is. It’s not too heavy but will need something sturdy.
